Internship Fair
I was very apprehensive about going to the internship fair as a freshman with no real intent on looking for an internship for this summer. I already have a job as a summer camp counselor set up and therefore don't need an internship yet. I only had a small amount of time to go, and I must have chose a busy time because it was very crowded. I walked in a loop around the tables, keeping to the inside while checking out what was there. I did not feel like it would be appropriate for me to really pursue talking to any of the representatives since I do not currently have a sincere interest in an internship. I also was mindful of how many committed students there were there and did not want to compete with them for the representatives' attention. As I was walking around, I did not see any internship geared to health care that I would be interested in, the majority of internships were geared to business, which does not interest me. The atmosphere was stressful but also exciting and I do look forward to actively pursuing internships in the future. The internship fair clearly helps facilitates internships and networking as I saw lots of contact information being exchanged. As evidence, my roommate got an email from an environmental company she talked to asking her to come in for an interview. I am excited it worked out well for my roommate and hope it will work out for other people in our English class!

Hey... I'm trying to post my own thread but I don't really know how to... Professor Blythe, I'll check with you today in class.
ReplyDeleteI went to the internship fair, but honestly I didn't like it a whole lot. One of the earlier posts said that you weren't missing much unless you were a junior and a business major, and that is completely correct. As a biology major I could not find anything that interested me in the slightest. I did happen to come across a table with an environmental twist (I am probably about to switch to an environmental sciences major) but the brochures kept on talking about saving money! I just didn't like that they took something that is supposed to be about the world and saving energy and brought it down to a business level where everyone is selfishly worried about money. So, I was a little frustrated that my only option did not work out.
I suppose that the internship fair would be pretty cool for those business majors out there, but I wan't feeling it. Maybe my expectations were too high? Although it wasn't for me, I can understand that having experience in the business field would be very beneficial in the future for just about anyone. I think that would be quite valuable for even a science oriented person.
Tell your roommate: way to go!
ReplyDeleteThis is interesting and sounds like a very good thing to get involved in if you're interested in business like I am. I'm surprised that you said there so many people dressed up and serious. I guess it's never too early to begin making a good impression with a potential employer. Good luck to you finding a health based internship in the future. The fact that so many people were exchanging contact information and that your roommate got an interview out of the process is very encouraging.
